By conducting a comparative assessment of the field costs of producing olives (i.e. up to when they have been harvested and are ready to be transported in crates) according to the different types of cultivation systems practised in its member countries, the IOC aims to identify what countries need in terms of support and technical assistance to allow olive growers to weigh up and compare their production costs and to identify potential room for reductions in order to increase their earnings. The Executive Secretariat has compiled a draft questionnaire designed to collect data about the types of farms and cultivation systems, orchard configuration in each country, the findings of other surveys already conducted on the same subject, and other information.
A group of experts designated by the IOC member countries will be meeting on 4 December at IOC headquarters to hone this questionnaire. Looking at the preliminary data available, they will identify the cultivation systems to be covered in the survey and will draw up an action plan.
