Celebrating 30 years of the Mediterranean diet pyramid
The International Olive Council (IOC), in collaboration with the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the International Centre for Advanced Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM), is proud to celebrate World Olive Day on Thursday, 21 November 2024, at CSIC’s headquarters in Madrid. This year’s event commemorates the 30th anniversary of the Mediterranean diet pyramid’s official publication, highlighting its enduring impact on global health and cultural heritage.
The event will feature esteemed speakers, including several co-authors of the Mediterranean diet pyramid. Dr. Walter Willett, Professor of Epidemiology and Nutrition at Harvard University and one of the most cited scientists globally in nutrition and public health, will share his insights through a video. Dr. Antonia Trichopoulou, a member of the Academy of Athens and an authority in nutritional epidemiology, has been instrumental in championing the Mediterranean diet as a model for health. Dr. Frank Hu, Chair of the Department of Nutrition at Harvard, whose work on diet and lifestyle’s impact on cardiometabolic diseases is internationally acclaimed, will also present. Dr. Miguel A. Martínez-González, a key investigator in groundbreaking studies like PREDIMED, adds his expertise in public health and the Mediterranean diet. Dr. Enrique Martínez Force, a leading researcher on olive oil’s chemical composition, and Greg Drescher, co-creator of the Mediterranean Diet Pyramid, will provide invaluable insights into the diet’s history and future.
Additionally, high-level authorities such as Luis Planas, Spain’s Minister for Agriculture, Jaime Lillo, IOC Executive Director, and Eloísa del Pino, CSIC President, will participate, underscoring the event’s significance.
