We need to protect the olive tree from fire and disease all over the world. It asked us through this photo, that is not a photoshop. It’s the harsh reality in the countryside of Acquarica di Lecce, close to the tip of the Italian peninsula, from where people used to leave for the Holy Land.
This photo seems to be a slap in the face of man’s negligence and in this torrid summer the fire are devastating large forests all over the world and especially in the Mediterranean area. Protecting the olive tree means protecting the health of citizens and the environment
“The olive tree, with its roots in the Mediterranean, is a universal symbol of peace and harmony”, says Abdellatif Ghedira IOC’s Executive Director. It has now the five continents wide presence and contributes to sustainable economic and social development and the preservation of natural resources in many countries. The olive grove ecosystem is a forest that has been well tended for more than 2.000 years. It is a very important part of a solution to Climate Change and it is a good a barrier against desertification. This very special forest of olive trees is a CO2 sink because removes CO2 from the atmosphere and fix it in the soil. In the production of one litre of olive oil, the tree remove 10kg of CO2 from the atmosphere.
A helping hand to the olive grove will save the world as well the olive grove do the same.
