The Mayor of the Italian town of Andria, Giovanna Bruno, personally received Mercedes Fernández, Head of the Standardisation and Research Unit of the International Olive Council, on her arrival from Madrid. She was accompanied on this occasion by the advisor for production activities, Cesare Troia, and the director of the Città dell’Olio Association, Antonio Balenzano. The meeting was coordinated by the external relations manager of the Qoco 2023 event, the journalist Nicola Curci. Giovanna Bruno thanked the IOC for its patronage of the event “Qoco, un filo d’olio nel piatto”, an event that sees young Mediterranean chefs compete in the kitchen using high quality extra virgin olive oil. Mercedes Fernández thanked the mayor for her invitation and highlighted the IOC’s commitment to scientific research, olive chemistry and the promotion of the IOC standard. “We must, said Fernandez, work together to develop a common standard, overcome obstacles and create a market in which olive oil producing and consuming countries have adopted the same standards. The Qoco event aims at raising awareness of the use of extra virgin olive oil in cooking, promoting the image of the product in view of eliminating trade barriers and promoting harmonisation with the IOC standard, which provides for this mission in its International Agreement”. At the end of the meeting, the mayor of Andria expressed her willingness to accept the invitation of the Executive Director of the IOC, Abdellatif Ghedira, to visit the headquarters of the Organisation in Madrid in order to make the collaboration between the two institutions more fruitful.
