On 28 January 2025, the International Olive Council (IOC) had the honour of welcoming a delegation from India to its headquarters in Madrid. The visit marked a significant step in strengthening collaboration between India and the IOC, with discussions focusing on membership possibilities and technical cooperation in the olive sector. The delegation included Ravi Agarwal, Advisor to Arjun Ram Meghwal, Minister from the Bikaner region in Rajasthan, Prithika Rani, Commercial Counsellor, and Virginia Guedán, Marketing Executive. Representing the IOC were Executive Director Jaime Lillo and Deputy Executive Director Abderraouf Laajimi.
The discussions focused on India’s growing olive sector, particularly in Rajasthan, a region that hosts the nation’s largest olive plantations. Mr Agarwal highlighted India’s interest in joining the IOC, outlining the potential benefits of membership, including access to technical expertise and international standards for olive cultivation and production.
The IOC representatives detailed the steps required for India to become a member, proposing the possibility of initially joining as an observer country. They also addressed the delegation’s request for technical assistance to support the development of new olive plantations in Rajasthan, an assistance which could encompass advanced cultivation techniques and expertise in managing sustainable olive-growing systems.
The delegation expressed interest in hosting an IOC technical team in Rajasthan to evaluate existing plantations and provide tailored recommendations for improving productivity and sustainability.
The IOC is committed to fostering international collaboration and supporting the growth of the global olive sector. This meeting marks an important step towards strengthening ties with India and promoting the shared vision of advancing olive production worldwide.
