The 31st meeting of ISO’s Technical Committee on Animal and Vegetable Fats and Oils
For many years, the International Olive Council (IOC) and the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) have been working together to harmonise international standards, particularly in the field of methods of analysis. As an observer to ISO, the IOC plays a key role in promoting internationally recognised scientific standards.
It was in this context that Dr Ibtihel Khemakhem, IOC representative, participated via videoconference in the 31st meeting of ISO/TC 34/SC 11 “Animal and vegetable fats and oils”, held on 24 and 25 October 2024 in Milan, Italy. The event brought together a wide range of stakeholders, from universities and research centres to public authorities and international organisations, to discuss the standardisation of sampling and analysis methods in the fats and oils sector.
Harmonising standards for fair trade
By participating in this meeting, the IOC reaffirmed the importance of ISO continuing to refer to the methods of analysis of the only organisation dedicated exclusively to olive products in its official standards. These methods, developed and revised on the basis of the results of in-depth scientific research and validated by collaborative trials involving international laboratories, guarantee the reliability and accuracy essential for world trade.
To illustrate this commitment, the IOC regularly presents a report detailing its standardisation and research activities. This collaboration with ISO reflects the IOC’s mission: to promote harmonised standards that ensure product quality, protect consumers and promote fair trade.
A partnership for innovation and reliability
Cooperation with ISO is part of the IOC’s overall strategy to establish a solid scientific basis and encourage the adoption of universal standards. By actively participating in meetings such as this, the IOC is reinforcing its leadership role in the development of international standards and affirming its commitment to working hand-in-hand with key stakeholders to meet the challenges facing the industry.
