EXPORT FIGURES OF OLIVE OIL IN THE EUROPEAN UNION (EU-27)

Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain are the most representative olive oil exporters from the European Union to other countries. They cover around 70% of global olive oil exports.
In the 2019/2020 crop year, extra-EU exports of olive oil reached 820 663 tonnes for an estimated value of €2.6932 billion (+15.8% and -0.1% , respectively, compared to the previous crop year). Intra-EU exports reached 1 056 941 tonnes for an estimated value of €2.6622 billion (+12.9% and -3.1%, respectively, compared to the previous crop year).
In May of the 2020/2021 crop year, the unit value index of extra-EU exports stood at 84.9 (+35.2% compared to the same period previous crop year or +2% compared to the previous month).
Also in May of the 2020/2021 crop year, the unit value of extra-EU exports stood at €363 per 100kg (+13.3% compared to the same period previous crop year or +1.5% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 69 120.3 tonnes (-5.2% compared to the same period previous crop year or -5.1% compared to the previous month).
Extra-EU exports mainly went to Australia(-46%), Brazil(+51.6%), Canada(-19.6%), China(-7.1%), Japan(+0.6%), Republic of Korea(+48.3%), Russian Federation(+26.4%), United kingdom(-24.7%), United States(-16.2%), compared to the same period the previous crop year.
By country, Spanish exports of olive oil reached 1 118 074 tonnes in the 2019/2020 crop year for an estimated value of €2.7962 billion, placing it in first place followed by Italy with 355 358 tonnes and €1.3574 billion ; Portugal with 208 919 tonnes and €588.9 millions ; and Greece with 160 856 tonnes and €450.7 millions.
The IOC’s figures for Spain from May of the 2020/2021 crop year put the unit value index of exports at 92.5 (+52.1% compared to the same period previous crop year or +5% compared to the previous month).
The unit value of extra-EU exports stood at €318 per 100kg (+13.1% compared to the same period previous crop year or +1.6% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 39 286.2 tonnes (-15.1% compared to the same period previous crop year or -3.6% compared to the previous month).
Spanish exports mainly went to Australia(-52.7%), Brazil(+65.5%), Canada(-41%), China(-6%), Japan(-14.8%), Republic of Korea(+99.4%), Russian Federation(+43.6%), United kingdom(-40.8%), United States(-27%), compared to the same period the previous crop year.
The unit value of intra-EU exports stood at €289 per 100kg (+29.7% compared to the same period previous crop year or +7.7% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 51 996.5 tonnes (+8.8% compared to the same period previous crop year or -8.7% compared to the previous month).
The IOC’s figures for Italy from May of the 2020/2021 crop year put the unit value index at 88.8 (+32.1% compared to the same period previous crop year or +1.3% compared to the previous month).
The unit value of extra-EU exports stood at €433 per 100kg (+12.9% compared to the same period previous crop year or +2.1% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 21 010.6 tonnes (+4.7% compared to the same period previous crop year or -6.5% compared to the previous month).
Extra-EU exports mainly went to Australia(+27%), Brazil(+81.9%), Canada(-4.9%), China(-14.5%), Japan(+43.2%), Republic of Korea(-27.1%), Russian Federation(+26.7%), United kingdom(-13%), United States(+0%), compared to the same period the previous crop year.
The unit value of intra-EU exports stood at €381 per 100kg (+5.9% compared to the same period previous crop year or -0.8% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 11 959.8 tonnes (+8.5% compared to the same period previous crop year or +6.4% compared to the previous month).
The IOC’s figures for Greece from May of the 2020/2021 crop year put unit value index of exports at 111.9 (+64.1% compared to the same period previous crop year or +5.9% compared to the previous month).

The volume exported to United States was -16.2% compared to the same period the previous crop year.
The unit value of intra-EU exports stood at €360 per 100kg (+27.3% compared to the same period previous crop year or +4.9% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 14 350.5 tonnes (+100.7% compared to the same period previous crop year or +21.5% compared to the previous month).
The IOC’s figures for Portugal from May of the 2020/2021 crop year put the unit value index of exports at 90.7 (+47.7% compared to the same period previous crop year or +5.8% compared to the previous month).
The unit value of extra-EU exports stood at €384 per 100kg (+10.7% compared to the same period previous crop year or +2.2% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 5 357.6 tonnes (+42.2% compared to the same period previous crop year or +3.5% compared to the previous month). The volume exported to Brazil was +46.2% compared to the same period the previous crop year.
The unit value of intra-EU exports stood at €282 per 100kg (+20% compared to the same period previous crop year or +7.7% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 10 349.1 tonnes (+12.7% compared to the same period previous crop year or +18.8% compared to the previous month).
