EXPORT FIGURES OF TABLE OLIVES IN THE EUROPEAN UNION (EU-27)

In March of the 2023/2024 crop year, the unit value of extra-EU exports of table olives stood at €419 per 100kg (+19.7% compared to the same period previous crop year or +3.7% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 23 620 tonnes (-6.4% compared to the same period previous crop year or -3.8% compared to the previous month).

As for first estimates of the 2022/2023 crop year, extra-EU exports of table olives reached 309 865 tonnes for an estimated value of €1.031 billion (-2.8% and +2.8% , respectively, compared to the previous crop year).

Spanish exports of table olives reached 306 671 tonnes in the 2022/2023 crop year for an estimated value of €901 million, placing it in first place followed by Greece with 186 745 tonnes and €623.3 million; Portugal with 46 932 tonnes and €68.6 million ; and Italy with 31 283 tonnes and €124.9 million.

In terms of volumes by product category, 81.2% of total imports were under code 20057000 (olives, prepared or preserved otherwise than by vinegar or acetic acid (excl. frozen)) in the 2022/2023 crop year, followed by imports under 20019065 with 4.5%, 07099210 with 5.7%, 07112010 with 5.2%, and the remaining 3.3% under 07108010.

In March of the 2023/2024 crop year, the unit value of extra-EU exports of table olives stood at €419 per 100kg (+19.7% compared to the same period previous crop year or +3.7% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 23 620 tonnes (-6.4% compared to the same period previous crop year or -3.8% compared to the previous month).

Also in March, extra-EU exports mainly went to Australia(+42.2%), Brazil(-47.9%), Canada(-24%), Russian Federation(-25.9%), Arabia Saudi(+11.7%), United kingdom(-2%), and United States(-2.6%), compared to the same period the previous crop year.

By country, Greece and Spain are the most representative table olives exporters from the European Union to other countries. They cover around 42% of global table olives exports.

Spain

The IOC’s figures for Spain from March of the 2023/2024 crop year put the unit value of extra-EU exports at €412 per 100kg (+18.2% compared to the same period previous crop year or +5.7% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 12 546.5 tonnes (+1.8% compared to the same period previous crop year or -2.9% compared to the previous month).

Spanish exports mainly went to Australia(+155.1%), Brazil(-30.3%), Canada(-8.9%), Japan(+34.6%), Russian Federation(+31.9%), Arabia Saudi(+4.5%), United kingdom(+3.8%), United States(-0.2%), Italy(-28%), Germany(-21.6%), France(-39%), and Portugal(-69.9%), compared to the same period the previous crop year.

The unit value of intra-EU exports stood at €385 per 100kg (+35.1% compared to the same period previous crop year or +13.1% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 8 247.5 tonnes (-41.2% compared to the same period previous crop year or +4% compared to the previous month).

Greece

The IOC’s figures for Greece from March of the 2023/2024 crop year put the unit value of extra-EU exports at €420 per 100kg (+24.7% compared to the same period previous crop year or +1.7% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 7 932 tonnes (-11.9% compared to the same period previous crop year or -7.9% compared to the previous month). The volume exported to United States was -9.4%, Italy was -35.2%, Germany was +11.9%, Romania was -43.3%, Australia was +18.8%, and Albania was -1.9% compared to the same period the previous crop year.

The unit value of intra-EU exports stood at €391 per 100kg (+26.2% compared to the same period previous crop year or +4.3% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 7 947.9 tonnes (-21.3% compared to the same period previous crop year or -3.3% compared to the previous month).

Portugal

The IOC’s figures for Portugal from March of the 2023/2024 crop year put the unit value of extra-EU exports at €310 per 100kg (-10.3% compared to the same period previous crop year or +8.6% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 601.8 tonnes (-50.7% compared to the same period previous crop year or +13.8% compared to the previous month). The volume exported to United States was +87.4%, Russia was -100%, Canada was -70.1%, Brazil was -55.7%, Spain was +118.2%, and France was -29.1% compared to the same period the previous crop year.

The unit value of intra-EU exports stood at €90 per 100kg (-12.5% compared to the same period previous crop year or -7% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 3 417.9 tonnes (+106.5% compared to the same period previous crop year or -2.6% compared to the previous month).

Italy

The IOC’s figures for Italy from March of the 2023/2024 crop year put the unit value of extra-EU exports at €489 per 100kg (+18.9% compared to the same period previous crop year or +2.3% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 1 776.4 tonnes (+0.6% compared to the same period previous crop year or -4.4% compared to the previous month).

Extra-EU exports mainly went to Australia(+11%), Canada(-40.4%), Japan(-31.3%), United kingdom(+26.7%), United States(-6.3%), compared to the same period the previous crop year.

The unit value of intra-EU exports stood at €226 per 100kg (-32.3% compared to the same period previous crop year or -47.3% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 1 157.5 tonnes (-13.6% compared to the same period previous crop year or +45.7% compared to the previous month).

In order to make the historical data comparable the figures have been calculated for the EU-27. The United Kingdom is no longer a Member State of the European Union, however until the end of the transition period, 31 January 2020, it is still part of the EU Customs Union.

Olive crop year means the period from 1 September of year t to 30 August of year t+1 for table olives.

Trade value in FOB type (free on board).

Export unit value in € / 100 kg.

The unit value index of exports is based on Paasche’ Chain Index method. The data are not seasonally adjusted. The unit value is calculated as (trade value)/quantity.
