EXPORT FIGURES OF OLIVE OIL IN THE EUROPEAN UNION (EU-27)

In April of the 2023/2024 crop year, the unit value index of extra-EU exports decreased by -0.1% compared to the previous month. The unit value of extra-EU exports stood at €975 per 100kg (-0.5% compared to the previous month).

As for first estimates of the 2022/2023, extra-EU exports of olive oil reached 602 134 tonnes for an estimated value of €3.593 billion (-26.6% and +0.4% , respectively, compared to the previous crop year).

Spanish exports of olive oil reached 728 008 tonnes in the 2022/2023 crop year for an estimated value of €3.857 billion, placing it in first place followed by Italy with 298 461 tonnes and €1.899 billion ; Portugal with 179 136 tonnes and €907.7 million ; and Greece with 246 519 tonnes and €1.4 billion.

In terms of volumes by product category in the 2022/2023 crop year, 73.4% of total exports were under code 15091020 (extra virgin olive oil), followed by imports under 15091080 (Virgin olive oil) with 3%, 15099000 (Other olive oils) with 21.6%, and the remaining 2.1% under 15091010 (Virgin lampante).

In April of the 2023/2024 crop year, the unit value index of extra-EU exports stood at 330.2 (+76.8% compared to the same period previous crop year or -0.1% compared to the previous month).

Also in April of the 2023/2024 crop year, the unit value of extra-EU exports stood at €975 per 100kg (+59.6% compared to the same period previous crop year or -0.5% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 57 503.5 tonnes (+34.3% compared to the same period previous crop year or +12.2% compared to the previous month).

Extra-EU exports mainly went to Australia(+132.6%), Brazil(+89.9%), Canada(+13.1%), China(+11%), Japan(+35.4%), Republic of Korea(+73.7%), Russian Federation(+36%), United kingdom(-9.5%), United States(+37.8%), compared to the same period the previous crop year.

By country, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain are the most representative olive oil exporters from the European Union to other countries. They cover around 70% of global olive oil exports.

Spain

The IOC’s figures for Spain from April of the 2023/2024 crop year put the unit value index of exports at 365.8 (+68.3% compared to the same period previous crop year or -1.5% compared to the previous month).

The unit value of extra-EU exports stood at €944 per 100kg (+62.8% compared to the same period previous crop year or -1% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 32 768.3 tonnes (+43.3% compared to the same period previous crop year or +26.4% compared to the previous month).

Spanish exports mainly went to Australia(+103.9%), Brazil(+40.1%), Canada(-29.2%), China(+36.9%), Japan(+15.5%), Republic of Korea(+27.4%), Russian Federation(+2.8%), United kingdom(+11.1%), United States(+72.2%), compared to the same period the previous crop year.

The unit value of intra-EU exports stood at €792 per 100kg (+58.4% compared to the same period previous crop year or -2.9% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 38 441.9 tonnes (+33.8% compared to the same period previous crop year or +12.3% compared to the previous month).

Italy

The IOC’s figures for Italy from April of the 2023/2024 crop year put the unit value index at 317 (+86.5% compared to the same period previous crop year or +2% compared to the previous month).

The unit value of extra-EU exports stood at €1035 per 100kg (+56% compared to the same period previous crop year or +1% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 16 837.5 tonnes (+19.8% compared to the same period previous crop year or -3.1% compared to the previous month).

Extra-EU exports mainly went to Australia(+234.2%), Brazil(+169.4%), Canada(+47.9%), China(-79.5%), Japan(+60%), Republic of Korea(+201.3%), Russian Federation(+140.7%), United kingdom(-41.5%), United States(+9.9%), compared to the same period the previous crop year.

The unit value of intra-EU exports stood at €464 per 100kg (-19.6% compared to the same period previous crop year or -53.7% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 7 436.2 tonnes (-28.1% compared to the same period previous crop year or -25% compared to the previous month).

Greece

The IOC’s figures for Greece from April of the 2023/2024 crop year put unit value index of exports at 352.1 (+91.7% compared to the same period previous crop year or -3.8% compared to the previous month).

the unit value of extra-EU exports stood at €910 per 100kg (+59.5% compared to the same period previous crop year or -0.9% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 1 884.4 tonnes (-7.3% compared to the same period previous crop year or +10.4% compared to the previous month). The volume exported to United States was -38.6% compared to the same period the previous crop year.

The unit value of intra-EU exports stood at €865 per 100kg (+59.6% compared to the same period previous crop year or -3.4% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 5 730.8 tonnes (-64.5% compared to the same period previous crop year or +0.3% compared to the previous month).

Portugal

The IOC’s figures for Portugal from April of the 2023/2024 crop year put the unit value index of exports at 271.9 (+42.8% compared to the same period previous crop year or -3.9% compared to the previous month).

The unit value of extra-EU exports stood at €1001 per 100kg (+58.2% compared to the same period previous crop year or +0% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 4 982.3 tonnes (+103.2% compared to the same period previous crop year or -5.5% compared to the previous month). The volume exported to Brazil was +100.4% compared to the same period the previous crop year.

The unit value of intra-EU exports stood at €634 per 100kg (+33.8% compared to the same period previous crop year or +1.2% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 13 371.7 tonnes (+110.9% compared to the same period previous crop year or +43.9% compared to the previous month).
